The Laboratory biosafety is a critical element of laboratory capacity and infrastructure.
It is defined as the protection of laboratory staff, the workplace and environment from exposure to hazardous biological agents, through the use of appropriate facilities, equipment, occupational health programs, and safe work practices.
All laboratory managers are encouraged to ensure a safe workplace for workers and compliance with national and international regulations, and guidance on laboratory safety programs. Biosafety is included as an indicator of laboratory capacity in our recent assessment and was one of the lowest scoring indicators.
This workshop is designed to present an overview of some the essential components of a laboratory biosafety program. Hands-on practical training sessions will provide managers, safety officers and mentors with action items to implement in the laboratory. The topics covered are key components to enhancing laboratory capacity and achieving a safe laboratory work place.
